Lake Natron Tented Camp, run by Moivaro, is a green, tree-shaded oasis at the foot of Ol Doinyo Lengai, a few kilometres from the southern shore of Lake Natron. It lies between the Ngorongoro Highlands and the Serengeti plains, which makes it a practical overnight stop on the back road between the two as well as a base for the lake itself.
Accommodation is in 16 en-suite tents under thatched roofs, each with a private veranda, plus six Maasai-style banda rooms with their own bathrooms. Facilities are simple and the setting is remote, so expect a rustic camp rather than a polished lodge. The thatched restaurant serves a daily changing set menu, and there is a stocked bar, a lounge looking out over the Maasai plains, a campfire and a natural swimming pool in the shady garden. Wi-Fi is available in the public areas.
Activities are arranged with local Maasai guides and include walks to the lake to see the flamingos, the hike along the Engaresero River to the waterfalls, visits to a Maasai boma and the climb of Ol Doinyo Lengai.
Lake Natron is a remote Rift Valley soda lake and East Africa's main breeding ground for lesser flamingos, overlooked by the active Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano. Visits are on foot with Maasai guides: flamingo walks, the Ngare Sero waterfalls and ancient hominid footprints.
