Mwagusi Safari Camp is an intimate, owner-operated tented camp nestled into the sandy banks of the Mwagusi Sand River within Ruaha National Park. Founded in 1987 by Chris Fox as a simple fly camp, it has evolved into an exclusive 13-banda safari camp that retains an authentic, unpretentious bush character. Built almost entirely from natural materials — grass thatch, timber, driftwood, stones, and reeds — each banda features a high-peaked makuti thatch roof, polished red floors, en-suite bathroom, and a spacious verandah with hammock overlooking the river.
The camp sits in a prime location for wildlife viewing, with elephants, lions, leopards, African wild dogs, and large herds of buffalo regularly passing through the dry riverbed directly in front of the bandas. Activities include morning and afternoon game drives in open-sided vehicles, guided walking safaris, night drives, and bird walks. The camp operates the Foxes Community & Wildlife Conservation Trust for rainforest conservation and anti-poaching efforts, representing a traditional old-style African safari experience.
