Papaya Lake Lodge

About this accommodation

LuxuryUganda

Papaya Lake Lodge is a boutique luxury retreat perched on the rim of the Lyantonde crater lake in western Uganda's Great Crater Lakes region. Founded by a European family who fell in love with this corner of Africa, the lodge sits between two extinct volcanoes, offering sweeping views over the turquoise waters of Lyantonde and Kifuruka lakes, with the snow-capped Rwenzori Mountains rising on the horizon. Nine individually designed cottages cascade down the crater slope, each with a private veranda overlooking the lake.

The lodge's crown jewel is its hilltop infinity pool, where guests can swim with an unobstructed 360-degree panorama of crater lakes, rolling green hills, and mountain peaks. Evenings are spent in the kerosene-lit bar sampling Ugandan coffees and cocktails before sitting down to a fusion menu that weaves together European techniques and East African flavors, prepared with herbs and fruits grown in the lodge's own gardens.

Papaya Lake Lodge is ideally positioned as a base for chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest National Park, just a 25-minute drive away. Guests can also explore the surrounding crater lakes on foot or by boat, go birdwatching, or simply unwind with a lakeside massage. The lodge's intimate scale — only nine cottages — ensures a peaceful, personalized experience.
