Zanzibar Honeymoon: Best Coast, Months and Costs for Two (2026/2027)

Quick answer

Is Zanzibar good for a honeymoon?

Yes. A Zanzibar honeymoon is one of the easiest to plan in East Africa: the sea stays at 26°C to 29°C all year, and the Serengeti is a direct flight of 1 hour 40 minutes away. Seven nights for two with flights from New York cost about $3,750 to $5,850, depending on the room.

A Zanzibar honeymoon is one of the easiest to plan in East Africa. The sea stays between 26°C and 29°C all year, and the Serengeti is a direct flight of 1 hour 40 minutes away. Seven nights for two with flights from New York cost about $3,750 in a well-reviewed beach hotel on the east coast and about $5,850 at an adults-only all-inclusive in Nungwi. From London the same week costs about £2,750 to £4,350.

GetSafariTours founder Karlis Auzins splits the island in two for honeymooners. The north suits couples who want evenings out and a beach they can swim from at any hour. The east suits couples who want seclusion and a small hotel, and don't mind timing their swims to the tide. He says the north is more popular but not by much.

Key takeaways

  • Choose the coast before the hotel. In places on the east coast, the tide pulls the water back a kilometre or more.
  • The best months are June to October and late December to February. Avoid April and May, the long rains, when some hotels close.
  • Seven nights for two cost about $3,750 to $5,850 with flights from New York.
  • Safari first, beach second, says Karlis.
  • Five resorts on our short list score 4.7 or more on Tripadvisor and cost under $1,000 a night.
  • Honeymoon perks are small. Of nine resorts we checked, five publish an offer, and only one takes money off the room.

Which coast suits you: north or east

The best place to stay on a Zanzibar honeymoon is the north, at Nungwi or Kendwa, if you want to swim whenever you like. Choose the east coast, from Matemwe to Jambiani, if you want quiet. The east and south-east beaches sit on a broad, shallow shelf. At low tide the waterline there can move hundreds of metres out, and on some stretches a kilometre or more. In the north the tide is less extreme, and parts of the beach stay swimmable through most of the day.

The wind matters as much as the tide. From about June to September the Kusi blows from the south-east at 15 to 20 knots. That's great for kitesurfers at Paje and Jambiani and less so if you want flat water, so for a calm sea in July and August the north and west coasts are the better bet. Our guide to Zanzibar's beaches goes beach by beach.

Stone Town works best as a start. A night or two there puts you within walking distance of the old town. Its hotels look over the harbour rather than a swimming beach, so most couples move on to the coast afterwards.

When to go, and the months to avoid

The best months for a Zanzibar honeymoon are June to October. September is the sweet spot: as dry as July and August but noticeably quieter once the European school holidays end. Late December to February is the second window, with the hottest weather and the clearest sea. Avoid April and May.

Months

Weather

Prices

June to October

Dry and sunny; July is the driest month, at about 31 mm of rain

Peak in July and August, moderate in June, September and October

November to mid-December

The short rains: about 201 mm and 13.7 rainy days in November

Lower

Late December to February

The hottest weather; February has the fewest rainy days, at 3.6

Christmas and New Year are the dearest weeks of the year, often with minimum stays

March to May

The long rains; April is the wettest month, at 408 mm

The lowest of the year, and some hotels close

Two dates can catch a honeymoon out. Ramadan in 2027 runs from about 8 February to 9 March, when visitors should avoid eating or drinking in public outside hotels and restaurants. And a December wedding followed straight by the beach lands on the year's highest rates.

Our best time to visit Zanzibar guide has the weather month by month.

Seven or ten nights: two sample plans

A week on the beach after a six-day safari is the classic honeymoon, says Karlis. If you have less time, here are the two shapes we'd suggest.

Seven nights, beach only

  • Night 1 in Stone Town: walk the old town with a guide for $20 to $30 each, then dinner on a rooftop.
  • Nights 2 to 7 on one coast. One boat day is enough for most couples: snorkelling at Mnemba Atoll costs $40 to $70 each, and a sunset dhow cruise $25 to $40.

Ten nights, with a safari first

  • Nights 1 to 4 on safari in northern Tanzania, flying in to Kilimanjaro: Tarangire, the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti.
  • Nights 5 to 10 on Zanzibar, after the direct flight of 1 hour 40 minutes from the Serengeti.

Our guide to things to do in Zanzibar prices the other trips, from the spice farms to Safari Blue at $65 to $100 each.

Adding a safari: which parks, how you get there, which order

Do the safari first and the beach after. "After a six, eight or ten-day safari you're tired, and the beach afterwards is perfect," says Karlis. The other order works too. You can also stay on Zanzibar and fly to the Serengeti for one or two nights.

4 days: the Serengeti by air

$2,800 to $2,900

The prices come from our safari from Zanzibar guide, which covers each route and its flights. A night in Nyerere suits couples who want to keep the beach as the main event.

Our honeymoon itineraries put the two together. Nine days with three nights on Zanzibar cost $9,040 for two at mid-range, and 14 days with a week on the island cost $19,740 in the luxury tier. See our safari and Zanzibar beach trips for the routes.

What a Zanzibar honeymoon costs for two

A seven-night Zanzibar honeymoon for two costs about $3,750 to $5,850 with flights from New York, depending on the room. From London it's about £2,750 to £4,350. The rooms below are Booking.com prices with taxes for 10 to 17 February 2027. The fares are the best-value ones on Google Flights, and we checked both on 11 October 2026.

It also covers the visas ($100 each for Americans and $50 for British travellers), Tanzania's $44 insurance for each of you and a return airport transfer by car. Most rooms come with breakfast, and other meals are extra except at the all-inclusive. On our itineraries every transfer is already included.

One insurance policy is enough. The mainland has required the $44 cover since 1 October 2026, as Zanzibar already did. But the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation confirmed on 7 October that a trip covering both needs only one policy.

What you spend on the island is up to you. Activities run from about $5 to $500 or more, says Karlis. Horse riding on the beach is at the top end.

Honeymoon perks and offers: what resorts give, and on what terms

Zanzibar's honeymoon perks are small. We checked nine resorts' own websites on 11 October 2026. Five publish a honeymoon offer. It usually means a romantic dinner and a massage or spa discount, often with a bottle of sparkling wine. Only one takes anything off the room.

Baraza, Bwejuu

Riu Palace Swahili and Meliá Zanzibar publish no honeymoon offer, and neither do Oasis Blu or Emerson Spice. Ask when you book. Take a copy of your marriage certificate either way, and check whether the offer needs a direct booking. Only Amani is also on our short list; the others are here for their terms.

Local customs couples should know

Zanzibar is a conservative Muslim society, and a few rules apply to every couple. Cover shoulders and knees in towns and villages, and keep swimwear for the beach and the hotel; fines start at $700. Alcohol is sold mainly in hotels, bars and restaurants aimed at visitors.

Same-sex couples face a real legal risk. Same-sex relationships are illegal in Zanzibar, with up to 14 years in prison. Holding hands or kissing in public can lead to arrest, according to the UK Foreign Office and the US State Department's human rights report.

Plastic bags are banned, so leave them at home. Flying a drone needs a permit. Our Zanzibar safety guide covers the rest, from petty theft to the travel advisories.

Zanzibar honeymoon: frequently asked questions

Yes. The sea is warm all year. The Serengeti is a direct flight of 1 hour 40 minutes away, so a safari fits into the same trip. Seven nights for two with flights from New York cost about $3,750 to $5,850, depending on the room.

The north around Nungwi and Kendwa suits couples who want to swim at any hour and go out in the evening. The east coast from Matemwe to Jambiani suits couples who want a quiet boutique hotel and don't mind timing swims to the tide. Stone Town is best for one or two nights at the start.

Seven nights is the classic length for the beach. With a safari, plan ten nights or more: four on safari and six on the island works well. GetSafariTours founder Karlis Auzins calls a six-day safari followed by a week on Zanzibar the classic honeymoon.

Seven nights for two cost about $3,750 to $5,850 with flights from New York, or £2,750 to £4,350 from London. Both totals include the visas, insurance and airport transfers. A well-reviewed beachfront room costs a median $172 a night in Paje and $308 in Nungwi, and an adults-only all-inclusive about $474.

June to October is the best time, with September the quietest of the dry months. Late December to February is the second window, with the hottest weather. Avoid April and May, the long rains. Ramadan in 2027 runs from about 8 February to 9 March.

In February 2027 Zanzibar cost less to reach from New York, at $1,013 against $1,136 for the Seychelles. From London the Seychelles was slightly cheaper, at £608 against £657. Zanzibar adds a safari 1 hour 40 minutes away by air, and Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000.

Yes. Zanzibar is 1 hour 5 minutes by air from Arusha and 1 hour 40 minutes from the Serengeti. A three-day safari from the island costs about $1,350 to $1,500 per person through Arusha, or $2,100 to $2,200 by air to the Serengeti.

Yes. Riu Palace Swahili in Nungwi is adults-only and all-inclusive. Oasis Blu in Nungwi is adults-only too. Amani Boutique Hotel in Paje calls itself adults-only on its own website, though its Small Luxury Hotels listing says guests from 16 are welcome.

Zanzibar is safe for most visitors who take ordinary care. The UK Foreign Office has no warning for the islands, and the US rates Tanzania as a whole Level 3 with nothing specific to Zanzibar. The main risks are petty theft, road accidents and touts. Same-sex couples should know that same-sex relationships are illegal there.

Pick the coast, then the hotel

The commonest complaint in Zanzibar reviews is a beach that disappeared at low tide, and choosing the coast first avoids it. If swimming whenever you like matters, book the north. If quiet matters more, book the east and choose a hotel with a pool for the low-tide hours.

Then put the safari first and the beach second. And tell the hotel it's your honeymoon when you book.
