Safari From Zanzibar: 1 to 4 Day Options, Flight Times and Costs (2026/2027)

A safari from Zanzibar means flying from the island's airport (ZNZ) to a park on the mainland. Zanzibar has beaches, spice farms and rare monkeys, but Tanzania's lions and elephants live a flight away. Nyerere National Park is 45 minutes from Zanzibar on a direct flight and Arusha about 75 minutes. The central Serengeti takes between 1 hour 45 minutes and three and a half hours, depending on the airline and its stops.

How many days you can spare decides which of those is worth the fare. We checked that against what guests did. Of the 4,569 reviews left for GetSafariTours partner operators, 40 describe a safari that began in Zanzibar, and 35 of them gave five stars. Both unhappy guests had gone by ferry and road instead of flying.

Is there a safari in Zanzibar itself?

Zanzibar itself has no big-game safari. Its one national park, Jozani Chwaka Bay, protects about 50 km² of forest and mangrove in the middle of the island and was created in 2004. The animal to see there is the Zanzibar red colobus, a monkey that lives nowhere else, and a visit takes a couple of hours.

You'll also see "Safari Blue" sold on every beach. That's a full-day dhow trip from Fumba into the Menai Bay Conservation Area, with snorkelling, a sandbank stop and a seafood lunch. Which safari is best from Zanzibar? Start with your days

The best safari from Zanzibar is the one whose flight fits your time: Nyerere for one day, Tarangire and the Ngorongoro Crater for two, the Serengeti for three or more. A park that takes half a day to reach is a poor choice for a two-day trip, however famous it is.

Two limits are worth knowing before you choose. On these short trips, rhino are a realistic sighting only in the Ngorongoro Crater. Cheetah belong to the Serengeti: camera-trap surveys published in the journal Oryx in 2023 found none in the Selous and Nyerere area, where the last confirmed record dates from the late 1990s.

Nyerere offers something the north doesn't. You can watch hippos and crocodiles from a boat on the Rufiji River, and the park holds one of the largest wild dog populations left in Africa.

A one-day safari from Zanzibar: Nyerere, Mikumi or Saadani

A one-day safari from Zanzibar is possible only in the southern parks, and it runs on chartered or shared light aircraft. Scheduled flights don't fit. Coastal Aviation's timetable, valid to May 2027, lands you in Nyerere at 09:15 and flies you out at 12:50, which leaves three and a half hours.

On a charter the day is long. One guest in our reviews landed at a Nyerere airstrip at 7:30 am and was on a game drive until about 5 pm, with a coffee stop at 10:30 and lunch at 1 pm. The verdict: a fantastic day, and a very tiring one.

Nyerere National Park, carved out of the old Selous Game Reserve, is the usual choice, because the flight is short and a boat safari on the Rufiji breaks up the day. Our Nyerere National Park guide covers the park.

Mikumi is open floodplain with zebra, giraffe, elephant and often lions. Safari Air Link is the only airline with scheduled flights there, so day trips share a chartered plane. On the large booking sites in September 2026, one-day Mikumi fly-ins were listed from under $500 a person on a shared departure, and at about $590 to $710 elsewhere.

Saadani is the closest park, about 15 minutes away, and Auric Air flies there twice a day. It's Tanzania's only coastal national park, 1,062 km² of bush running down to the Indian Ocean. Wildlife is thinner than in Nyerere, so choose it for the short flight.

Only one of the 40 reviews describes a day trip. A family with children aged 6 and 9 flew to the Selous side of Nyerere and recommended it without reservation. For young children, one day is often the right amount.

The Serengeti can't be done in a day on scheduled flights. Coastal's plane back to Zanzibar leaves Seronera at 10:45, or 11:30 in high season, while the morning flight from the island lands between 11:00 and 12:15. Two days from Zanzibar: a night in Nyerere, or Tarangire and the crater

Two-day trips are the most common in our reviews: 13 of the 40, and nine of those went north.

The southern two-day trip is a night in Nyerere. Sleeping in the park adds the dawn game drive, when predators are still moving, and leaves time for both the boat and an afternoon drive. All three four-star reviews in our set were Nyerere trips. They were marked down for a booking mix-up, a quiet boat ride and a poor walking safari, never for the game drives, which one of them scored five out of five.

The northern two-day trip goes through Arusha. On our three-day itinerary the 08:00 flight lands at 09:15, and Tarangire is 1.5 hours away by road, so you're among its elephant herds by late morning. You sleep near Karatu, on the crater's doorstep. Next morning you go down into the Ngorongoro Crater, then drive back to Arusha for the flight to the island.

The crater is why this route is worth the fare. One guest counted two black rhinos there on a two-day trip from Zanzibar. A family of six, with grandparents and children of 5 and 8, did the same route and gave it five stars.

Three to four days: a Serengeti safari from Zanzibar

A Serengeti safari from Zanzibar is best from three days up. Flightlink flies daily from Zanzibar to Seronera, Fort Ikoma and Kogatende. Auric Air lists a daily direct flight of about 1 hour 45 minutes. Coastal Aviation's 08:40 departure stops in Arusha and Manyara and reaches Seronera at 12:15, with a faster 08:30 service from July to September that lands at 11:00.

On our itineraries you land at about 11:00. Your guide is waiting at the airstrip with a picnic lunch, and the first game drive starts there.

Three days means two nights. You get the arrival-day drive, one full day and a last dawn in the park before the mid-morning flight back. If you'd rather not repeat the long flight, finish at the Ngorongoro Crater and fly home from Arusha, which is how our 3-day fly-in to the Serengeti and Ngorongoro runs.

Operators do sell a two-day version. Four guests in our reviews took one, covering the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater in two days, and all four gave it five stars. It works if you accept what it is: about nine hours of game viewing for the price of two long flights. We'd still add a day.

The airstrip changes with the season. Seronera, in the centre, is good all year. From July to October the herds are in the far north, and you fly to Kogatende for the Mara River crossings, as on our 3-day northern Serengeti safari. Flying, or the ferry and the road?

For any trip from the island of under four days, fly.

Both ferry-and-road trips among our 40 reviews went to Mikumi, and neither guest had been told how long the drive was. One reached the park at 3 pm, had three hours of game driving and spent the whole next day getting back. The other lost the first day to a missing driver and a missed ferry. Each said afterwards that flying looked like the better choice.

Light aircraft have luggage rules. Coastal Aviation allows 15 kg a person including hand luggage and strongly recommends soft bags. Flightlink allows one checked piece of 20 kg and warns that its Serengeti flights use smaller aircraft with no room for extras. Hotels in Zanzibar will usually store your suitcase while you're away, and our safari packing list shows what goes in the duffel.

Our operators book Flightlink most often, and schedules do change now and then. In one review the airline moved a return flight to a different airport. The operator's owner met the guests there and got them onto another plane leaving at the same time, which is the practical reason to book flights and safari together.

How much is a safari from Zanzibar?

A safari from Zanzibar costs from about $1,350 a person for three days through Arusha to about $2,900 for four days in the Serengeti. These are our operators' 2026/2027 mid-range prices per person for two people sharing.

The flights explain most of the gap. On Coastal Aviation's July 2026 price list, Zanzibar to Seronera and back comes to about $1,270 an adult including the listed taxes, against about $770 for Arusha and back. The two-day Arusha trip costs only a little less than the three-day one for the same reason: the flights are identical, and only one lodge night and one day of park fees drop out.

Group size moves the price more than anything else. At four people the three-day Arusha trip falls to about $1,200 each, because the vehicle and guide are shared. A solo traveller pays roughly a third more than each of two people sharing, and up to 45 percent more on a Serengeti fly-in. Our private vs group safari guide explains the arithmetic.

Check what a quote includes before comparing it. Our three-day Arusha trip is priced with the return flight, but one guest in our reviews found the flight back to Zanzibar wasn't in their package.

Park fees are the other big line: $82.60 a day per adult in the Serengeti and Nyerere in peak season, and $23.60 for children aged 5 to 15. Gates check passports, as one family found when a ranger queried their 15-year-old's age. Is a safari from Zanzibar worth it?

A safari from Zanzibar is worth it when the trip length matches the park. Of the 40 guests who reviewed one, 38 gave four or five stars, and the two who didn't had spent most of their trip on a ferry and a highway.

A one-day trip is worth it if you want your children to see elephants and giraffes without a week of early starts. If lions and leopards are the dream, one day is a gamble. The guest who spent three days in Nyerere never found a leopard or a wild dog, so add a night or go north.

The trip is at its best as two or three days through Arusha. The Ngorongoro Crater is small enough to cover in a morning and holds lions, elephants, buffalo and black rhino on one crater floor. The return flight costs about $500 less than the Serengeti one.

When to go

The dry season from June to October is the best time to fly from Zanzibar to any of these parks, because animals gather at the remaining water. January and February are a close second, with the calving in the southern Serengeti.

Booking a safari from Zanzibar without getting burned

Hotel desks and beach agents usually resell trips run by mainland operators, so you often can't tell who is running the safari. Ask for the company's name and its tourism licence before you pay anyone.

Check four things in any quote: the flight back, the park fees, the Nyerere boat safari and the airport transfers in Zanzibar. Get them in writing. One guest in our reviews booked four days before travel. They were sent the operator's registration and tourist board certificate, checked the reservation with the lodge, and only then paid. That trip got five stars.

Book the safari before you fix your beach dates if you can. The light aircraft on the park routes carry about a dozen passengers, and July to September is their busiest time: Coastal Aviation adds extra Serengeti flights for those months. The morning flight

Most safaris from Zanzibar start the same way: a dark drive across the island, a small terminal, and a plane with a dozen seats. By mid-morning the ocean has given way to red earth and thorn trees, and somebody in the vehicle has already spotted a giraffe.
