Tanzania Park Fees: What You Actually Pay in 2026/2027

Tanzania park fees are the government conservation charges you pay to enter a national park. They are separate from what your safari operator charges, and neither you nor your operator can negotiate them.

On a standard six-day Northern Circuit safari, two adults sharing one vehicle pay USD 2,124 in government fees. That works out to USD 1,062 per person, or USD 177 per person per day.

That number is the reason Tanzania costs more than most people expect. Before you look at a single lodge, roughly a third to a half of your Tanzania safari cost is already spoken for.

What a real six-day safari pays in Tanzania park fees

Two adults, one vehicle, peak season. One day in Tarangire, three nights in the Serengeti sleeping inside the park, one night in Ngorongoro with a crater descent. This is the standard Northern Circuit shape.

Nothing in that table pays for a lodge, a guide, a vehicle, a meal, or a transfer. It is money that goes to Tanzania National Parks and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority.

Who charges what: TANAPA, NCAA and TAWA

Three authorities collect fees in Tanzania. Mixing them up is the most common reason two quotes for the same itinerary look nothing alike.

TANAPA (Tanzania National Parks Authority) runs the 21 national parks, Serengeti and Tarangire and Ruaha and Nyerere among them. One tariff covers the lot, with parks sorted into price tiers.

NCAA (Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority) runs Ngorongoro, and nothing else. Ngorongoro is not a national park at all. It is a conservation area where Maasai families still live and graze cattle alongside the wildlife, which is why it has its own authority, its own tariff, its own permit rules, and a crater descent fee that exists nowhere else in the country.

TAWA (Tanzania Wildlife Management Authority) has the game reserves and game-controlled areas that sit outside both systems. Most Northern Circuit trips never touch one.

So a standard Northern Circuit safari pays two different authorities on the same trip, under two different rulebooks. That is why your permit behaves one way at the Serengeti gate and another at Ngorongoro.

How to check the quote you have been sent

Take the price you have been quoted per person and hold it against the fee total for your itinerary. The proportion tells you a lot.

At USD 2,500 per person for a mid-range six-day Northern Circuit, government fees are about 42% of what you are paying. Drop to a USD 1,600 budget camping trip and they swallow 66%. Go up to USD 6,000 and they fall to 18%. Same fees every time. Only the denominator moves.

Three things to look for:

1. Ask for the fee line separately. A reputable operator will show you government fees as their own line. If a quote cannot be broken into fees, accommodation and services, ask why.
2. Check the park-day count matches your itinerary. Conservation fees run per 24 hours, not per calendar date. A three-night Serengeti stay should bill three conservation days, not four.
3. Be suspicious of quotes far below the fee floor. If someone offers a six-day Northern Circuit at USD 1,100 per person, the arithmetic does not work. Either the itinerary spends less time in parks than you think, or something is being left out.

According to Emmanuel Mnyenye, founder and head guide at GetTogetherAdventures, these are the rates his company is billed as of September 2026:

"Serengeti conservation is USD 82.60 per adult per 24 hours. Ngorongoro entry is USD 70.80 per adult. The crater service fee is USD 295 per vehicle, per descent. Those are the numbers on our invoices, and they have not moved this year."

Where you can actually save

Park fees are fixed, so the levers are structural. Ranked by how much they move the total on the six-day trip above.

Sleep outside the park. Saves up to $424.80 for two people. Concession fees apply only if you sleep inside a park boundary. Three nights in the Serengeti at $70.80 per person per night is $424.80 for a couple, which is 20% of the entire fee bill. Lodges in Karatu, outside the Ngorongoro gate, or in the Ndutu conservation area carry no TANAPA concession fee. The trade-off is drive time each morning, so this works better for shorter park visits than for a Serengeti-focused trip.

Share the vehicle. Saves about $275 per person. Vehicle entry and the crater service fee are charged per vehicle, not per person. The six-day trip above carries three vehicle entries at $177 each plus the $295 crater fee: $826 in per-vehicle charges, and that number does not change whether one person is in the car or six. Split two ways it is $413 each. Split six ways, $137.67. That gap is the single biggest reason group departures undercut private ones.

Skip the crater descent. Saves $295. The crater service fee is charged per vehicle per descent. Plenty of trips include a crater rim viewpoint and a full day in the Serengeti instead. Cut a park-day. Saves $153.40 per person. Each additional night inside the Serengeti in peak season costs $153.40 per person in fees alone ($82.60 conservation plus $70.80 concession), before accommodation. Go south instead. Saves 57% per park-day. Ruaha, Katavi, Mikumi, Mkomazi and Saadani charge $35.40 per adult per day against the Serengeti's $82.60. Note that Nyerere is the exception: despite being a southern park it sits in the premium tier at $82.60, the same as the Serengeti. If your priority is cost per day in the bush rather than seeing the migration, Ruaha is where the maths changes.

Travel in low season. Saves $153.40 for two people. Two separate seasonal discounts land together in the second half of March through mid-May. Serengeti conservation drops from $82.60 to $70.80, Tarangire from $59.00 to $53.10, and the Serengeti concession fee is already at its $59.00 off-peak rate. Serengeti vs Masai Mara park fees

Kenya's Masai Mara is the Serengeti's northern continuation. Same plains, same migration, same animals walking across the same grass. The fees are not remotely the same.

In peak migration season the Serengeti charges about 41% of what the Mara does per adult, and the Tanzanian permit runs twice as long. A Mara ticket expires at 6pm, so a dawn drive and a late-evening drive fall on two separate tickets. A Serengeti permit covers both.

The gap narrows in Kenya's low season, and the Mara is a smaller, denser reserve where you cover less ground for the same sightings. Note also that the conservancies bordering the reserve charge their own nightly conservation fees on top of the county tariff, so a Mara itinerary can carry costs the published reserve fee never shows.

The fees people do not expect

Conservation fees get quoted. The rest catch people out.

Concession fees. Sleep inside a park and you pay a nightly concession fee on top of your room rate and on top of your conservation fee. Serengeti and Nyerere charge $70.80 per adult per night from July to September and $59.00 from October to June. Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Arusha and Kilimanjaro charge $47.20. Ngorongoro charges $59.00.

Note that the concession season and the conservation season do not align. Conservation fees switch on 15 March and 16 May. Concession fees switch on 1 July and 1 October. A trip in early June pays peak conservation and low-season concession.

Vehicle entry. Charged per vehicle, per park entry, by tare weight. Up to 2,000 kg costs $47.20. From 2,001 to 3,000 kg costs $177.00. A fitted safari Land Cruiser sits in the second band, so most safaris pay $177 per park entered. Open-sided vehicles pay 50% more.

The 24-hour rule. A TANAPA permit runs 24 hours from the moment you enter, and it allows multiple entries inside that window. A Ngorongoro permit allows one entry within 24 hours. Cross a gate at the wrong hour and you buy another day.

Activity supplements. A Serengeti balloon flight adds $59.00 per person on top of the operator's balloon price. Night game drives add $59.00 per person where permitted. A short walking safari adds $23.60. Olduvai Gorge adds $35.40.

Why you will see different numbers elsewhere

Two reasons, and they explain most of the confusion online.

The tariff TANAPA currently publishes covers financial year 2023/2024. No replacement schedule has been issued since. In January 2025 the Tanzania Association of Tour Operators objected to amended regulations that would have raised some fees substantially, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism suspended implementation, and TANAPA committed to at least 12 months notice before any future increase. Those rates are still what operators are billed today, confirmed against September 2026 invoices, but this is the part of the page most likely to move first.

Separately, the published tariff and the TANAPA website disagree on whether the listed figures include tax. They do not. The figures on this page are the post-tax amounts operators are billed, which is why they run higher than the numbers on TANAPA's own PDF. Serengeti conservation is listed at $70 and billed at $82.60. Ruaha is listed at $30 and billed at $35.40.

Budget for the fees first

Most people plan a Tanzania safari backwards. They pick the lodges first, fall for a camp somewhere in the middle of the Serengeti, and only then find out that a third of the budget was never really theirs to spend.

Work the other way round. Decide how many park-days you want and where you want to sleep, price the government fees on those decisions, and whatever survives is your actual accommodation budget. Less romantic. But it is the only version where the trip you planned and the trip you can afford turn out to be the same trip.
