How much does an African safari cost per day?
An African safari costs $120 to $5,000 per person per day, and the style you choose matters more than anything except the country. These are 2026 prices per person, two sharing a room, with park fees, meals, the vehicle and a guide included but no international flights:

Price guides disagree because they price different trips. SafariBookings, a listing site with more than 16,000 tours, averages a mid-range day in Tanzania at $375 to $425. A room at the Four Seasons Safari Lodge in the Serengeti cost about $1,030 per person a night for November 2026, with meals and house drinks but no game drives or park fees.
Tanzania's government has measured what travellers actually spend. Its 2024 International Visitors' Exit Survey, run by the tourism ministry, the Bank of Tanzania and the National Bureau of Statistics among more than 15,000 departing visitors, found wildlife-safari visitors on package trips spent $586 per person per night, not counting international flights. Package visitors from the US spent $456 a night across all trip types, Britons $356 and Germans $304, and holiday visitors from all three stayed 12 or 13 nights on average. African safari cost by country
The country sets the African safari cost more than any lodge choice, because each one charges different fees and suits a different style of trip. Per person per day, two sharing, 2026, without international flights:

The ranges combine the lodges' published 2026 rates, the official fees below and listing-site averages. Rwanda isn't in the table because almost everyone goes for the gorillas, so it's priced by the trip.
Tanzania
Tanzania costs about $210 to $400 per person per day on a budget and $400 to $700 mid-range. Luxury camps start around $700. The floor is a group-joining safari, where you buy a seat in a shared vehicle. Our partner operators' 5-day departures cost $1,035 per person camping (about $207 a day) or $1,670 in mid-range lodges.

Kenya
A Kenya safari costs much the same as Tanzania: about $250 to $400 per person per day on a budget and $400 to $800 mid-range. At luxury camps it's $700 to $3,500 a day. Where you sleep in the Masai Mara sets most of the bill. Inside the reserve, Mara Serena's booking engine showed about $250 per person a night for November 2026 and $495 in the last week of December (meals only), while Angama Mara above the Mara Triangle charges $1,850 to $2,750 with drinks and game drives.
The Mara's fee is $200 per adult per day from July to December and $100 from January to June. The ticket runs from 6 am to 6 pm, whatever time you arrive. So a budget Mara day in the migration months can't cost the $150 to $250 some price guides quote for Kenya. Uganda
A Uganda safari costs about $300 to $400 per person per day on a budget and $450 to $800 mid-range, plus the gorilla permit. At luxury lodges it's $800 to $1,900. The permit costs $800 per trek ($600 in April, May and November since February 2026). That makes Uganda the cheaper of the two main gorilla countries.
Lodges near Bwindi range from about $85 per person a night with meals to $1,780 at Bwindi Lodge in high season. Getting there is the hidden cost: Bwindi is 457 km by road from Entebbe, or $359 each way on Aerolink's flight to Kihihi. Rwanda
Rwanda is the priciest place to see gorillas. The permit costs $1,500 per trek. Lodges near Volcanoes National Park charge $1,220 to $3,795 per person a night at the luxury end in 2026, from Virunga Lodge to Wilderness Bisate. Davinci Gorilla Lodge in Kinigi is the budget exception at about $165 to $215 per person with meals.
The saving is time: Volcanoes is 117 km by road from Kigali's airport, so a gorilla trip can take three days. One guest in our partner reviews chose Uganda instead, partly because it was much cheaper.
South Africa
A South Africa safari costs from about $120 per person per day self-driving in Kruger. Mid-range camps in the private reserves cost $350 to $750 a day and luxury lodges $1,100 to $3,700. It's the cheapest way to see the Big Five, because you can drive yourself.
At SANParks' September 2026 prices, two people sharing a Skukuza bungalow (R2,084 a night) and a hire car pay about $116 each per day including the R602 park fee. Fuel and food come on top, and camping brings it down to about $67.
The private reserves on Kruger's western edge cost far more. Camps in the Timbavati and Klaserie charge $333 to $477 per person a night with meals and game drives. Sabi Sand lodges such as MalaMala and Londolozi start around $1,600, and Singita reaches $3,716 in peak season.
Botswana
A Botswana safari costs about $600 to $1,350 per person per day mid-range and $1,700 to $5,000 or more at luxury camps. That's the most of any country here, and its park fees are the smallest part of the bill. The camps sit in private concessions in the Okavango Delta and the Linyanti, reached by light aircraft. Most luxury camps there charge $3,000 to $4,350 per person a night, and Wilderness's Mombo costs $5,043 from June to October 2026.
The mid-range starts around $600 at Oddballs' Camp in the Delta. Flights from Maun to the camps add $300 to $500 per person each way. Self-drive with public campsites is the cheap way in, at about $220 per person per day before fuel and food.
Namibia
A Namibia safari costs about $160 to $275 per person per day self-driving and $300 to $700 mid-range. Luxury lodges run $900 to $3,100 a day. Self-drive is what keeps it cheap. A 4x4 camper with rooftop tents and a campsite at Etosha's Okaukuejo camp cost about $162 per person per day for two in September 2026 (or $107 each for four), before fuel and food.
Lodges run from about $120 per person a night with breakfast to $3,122 at Horizon by Ongava, and most charge extra for game drives. Two costs rose recently: Etosha's fee went up to N$280 (about $17) a day in April 2026, and US and UK visitors now pay N$1,600 (about $98) for a visa on arrival.
Zambia and Zimbabwe
A mid-range safari costs about $300 to $850 per person per day in Zambia and $550 to $1,000 in Zimbabwe, between South Africa and Botswana on price. South Luangwa charges $25 a day to enter. Its camps range from a $15 campsite to $1,840 per person a night at Time + Tide Chinzombo. Flatdogs Camp's package costs $471 with meals, two activities and park fees.
Mid-range camps in Zimbabwe's Hwange charge about $530 to $870 per person a night in 2026. Wilderness's camps there cost $1,432 to $1,820 with park fees included. The $50 KAZA Univisa covers both countries for 30 days, which suits a trip that takes in Victoria Falls.

Why safaris cost so much: the fees each country charges
Every safari country charges a government fee to enter its parks, and the size of that fee explains much of the price gap between countries. In the four East African countries, fees and permits are a large share of the bill. In southern Africa they're small, and the money goes on the lodges and flights. This is what each country charges a foreign adult in 2026:

Tanzania's fees add up fastest when you sleep inside a park. Three August nights at a Serengeti camp cost $153.40 per person a night in conservation and concession fees before the room is paid for; our Tanzania park fees guide shows where a lodge outside the boundary avoids the concession fee.
Botswana is the opposite case. Its park fees are among the lowest here, yet it's the most expensive country for a safari, because the price sits in the camps: few beds, private concessions and guests flown in by light aircraft.

The vehicle and guide cost more than the fees, and they're shared. Four adults on the same week pay $3,061 each, because the vehicle and the crater fee split four ways. Budget lodges bring a couple's week down to $2,904 each, and high-end camps push it up to $4,906.

How much is a 2-week trip to Africa from the US or UK?
A 2-week trip to Africa with a mid-range safari costs about $9,000 per person from the US, flights included, or about £6,500 to £6,800 from the UK. Johannesburg and Entebbe were priced above their usual range that day, which shows how much fares move, so check yours before fixing the budget. Maun has no direct long-haul flights, which is part of why Botswana costs more to reach.

What an all-inclusive safari price covers
An all-inclusive safari price covers what you can't do without once you're there: park fees, the vehicle and guide, your room and meals, and transfers. What it leaves out is mostly paid before you go, or in cash on the way home.

Bush flights swing a budget more than any other extra. Coastal Aviation charges $313 with taxes from Arusha to the central Serengeti, Airkenya $221 to $308 from Nairobi to the Mara and Aerolink $359 from Entebbe to Bwindi, and each allows 15 kg of luggage on a standard ticket.

How much does an African safari cost for a family of 4?
A family of four pays less per person than a couple on a private safari, because the vehicle, the guide and some fees are charged once per vehicle. Our Tanzania safari cost calculator puts a 7-day mid-range private safari in high season at $10,984 for two adults and two children under 16, or $2,746 each. The same trip for two adults comes to $7,741, which is $3,870 each.
Children cost less in two ways. Ages 5 to 15 pay $23.60 a day to enter the Serengeti against $82.60 for an adult, and under-5s go free, while the calculator prices each child's bed at 45% of a room rate.
Gorilla trekking is the exception: Uganda and Rwanda only issue permits from age 15, so a family with younger children can't all go. Our family safari guide covers minimum ages and malaria, and the family safaris page lists itineraries built for children.
Travelling alone works the other way. The calculator's solo price for the same week is $7,076, 91% of what a couple pays in total, because one person carries the whole vehicle; a group-joining seat is the usual fix.
When a safari costs less
The green season, the rainy months when lodges cut their rates, is the cheapest time for a safari in every country here, but the fees don't all fall with it. In Tanzania the lodges discount the most. Our calculator prices a 7-day mid-range safari for two at $6,585 in the March to May low season against $7,741 in high season, 15% less.
The fees move less. The Masai Mara halves its charge from January to June, Uganda's gorilla permit drops to $600 in April, May and November, and Rwanda's to $1,050 from November to May if you add two nights in Akagera or Nyungwe. The Serengeti's fee only falls from $82.60 to $70.80, between 15 March and 15 May, and Kruger's has no low season at all.
Botswana's top camps cut deeply. Mombo drops from $5,043 to $3,285 per person a night from November to mid-December 2026, 35% less. Cheaper months have a catch in East Africa: April and May bring the long rains, and some camps close. Is an African safari worth the money?
An African safari is worth the money for most people who go, judging by what they write afterwards, though nobody calls it cheap. One guest in our partner operators' reviews called it a question of priorities: expensive, but what they'd chosen to spend on for a 50th birthday. Another, on a day trip alone, thought it a lot of money until they worked it out per hour.
The sharper test is comparison. Eight guests in the 4,569 partner reviews we hold had been on safari in South Africa before their Tanzania trip, and some had also been to Kenya, Botswana or Namibia. All eight rated Tanzania as good as or better than those trips. One said they saw more animals than in South Africa, and another put the difference down to the Serengeti's open plains, where animals are easier to spot.
Where guests feel the price, it's usually in a place you can plan around:
- The balloon flight. Balloon flights come up in 74 reviews. Nine guests weigh the price: eight say it was worth it, four of them while calling it expensive, and one thought it poor value because they saw few animals from the air.
- Travelling alone. A solo traveller found Tanzania pricey without anyone to share the vehicle, then chose a lodge package over budget camping anyway.
- Gorilla permits. Guests in Rwanda called their trip expensive because of the $1,500 permit.
Five ways to pay less for the same safari
The biggest savings come from sharing costs and choosing when and where you go. These five move a Tanzania quote the most:
- Join a group. A 5-day group-joining camping safari costs $1,035 per person. You share the vehicle and a fixed route with other travellers, and our partners' departures leave every day.
- Fill the vehicle. Four adults pay $3,061 each for a mid-range week; two pay $3,870.
- Go in the green season. It's 15% cheaper from March to May.
- Fly one way, not both. Driving in and flying out, at $303 from the Serengeti to Arusha on Coastal Aviation, halves the flight bill.
- Mix in cheaper parks. Tarangire costs $59 a day and Ruaha $35.40, against $82.60 for the Serengeti.

Pick the country and the month first
The country and the month decide most of what a safari costs, so settle those before you compare lodges.
