Rwanda vs Uganda Gorilla Trekking: 2026/2027 Costs Compared
By Karlis A. from GetSafariTours

Quick answer
Rwanda or Uganda for gorilla trekking?
Uganda is the better value: its gorilla permit costs $800 in 2026/2027, or $600 in April, May and November, against $1,500 in Rwanda. Rwanda is quicker, with Volcanoes National Park about 2 hours 30 minutes by road from Kigali. Both give you one hour with a habituated mountain gorilla family.
Rwanda vs Uganda gorilla trekking comes down to money against time. Uganda's permit costs $800 in 2026/2027 against $1,500 in Rwanda. In April, May and November Uganda's drops to $600. Rwanda is quicker. Volcanoes National Park is about 2 hours 30 minutes by road from Kigali, close enough for a day trip. Bwindi in Uganda is a day's drive from Entebbe or a domestic flight. Either way you get one hour with a habituated mountain gorilla family in a group of eight at most. For most travellers Uganda is the better value, and Rwanda the better choice when time is short.
Our partner operators' guests have written 153 reviews that mention gorillas, and 25 of them name both countries. Most of those flew into Kigali and drove across the border to trek in Bwindi, a route that combines Rwanda's airport with Uganda's cheaper permit.
Key takeaways
- A Uganda permit costs $800, or $600 in April, May and November. Rwanda's costs $1,500, or $1,050 from November to May if you also spend two nights in Akagera or Nyungwe.
- From Kigali, two nights in southern Bwindi cost about $1,580 per person including the transfer, less than a day trip to Rwanda's gorillas at about $1,700.
- Rwanda is the quick option: 2 hours 30 minutes from Kigali.
- Uganda's habituation experience, a longer visit to a family that's still getting used to people, rises from $1,500 to $1,800 on 1 January 2027.
- The US State Department rates Uganda Level 4 and Rwanda Level 3. Check the latest advisory before you book.
Rwanda vs Uganda at a glance
Gorilla trekking is a guided hike into the forest to spend one hour with a family of habituated mountain gorillas, on a permit bought in advance. Mountain gorillas live in only two places. One is Bwindi with the neighbouring Sarambwe reserve in Congo; the other is the Virunga volcanoes shared by Rwanda, Uganda and Congo. The last censuses counted 1,063 of them, according to the International Gorilla Conservation Programme. Bwindi and Sarambwe held 459.

Gorilla permit prices for 2026 and 2027, and how to book them
A gorilla permit costs $800 in Uganda and $1,500 in Rwanda in 2026/2027, and both countries cut the price in their wet months. Uganda's cut is simple. Rwanda's comes with conditions.
Permit | Uganda | Rwanda |
|---|---|---|
Standard trek, high season | $800 | $1,500 |
Low season | $600 in April, May and November, and these can't be rescheduled | $1,050 from November to May, with two nights in Akagera or Nyungwe, or one in each, plus a paid activity there |
Habituation experience | $1,500 now, $1,800 from 1 January 2027 | Not offered |
Chimpanzees, for comparison | $300 in Kibale from 2027 | Sold separately in Nyungwe |
Uganda's figures come from the Uganda Wildlife Authority's letter of 26 February 2026, and Rwanda's from the Rwanda Development Board's booking portal, both checked on 11 October 2026.
Booking works differently in each country. Since 1 March 2026 a Ugandan permit is only secured once it's paid in full; the old seven-day unpaid hold is gone. On our Uganda trips the operator buys the permit for you and pays it at booking. In Rwanda you book through the Rwanda Development Board's portal or an operator, and the park doesn't take cash.
Rwanda's discount has a catch: it rewards a longer trip. You get one discounted permit for each three-day, two-night stay that includes Akagera or Nyungwe, so it suits a week in Rwanda rather than a quick gorilla visit.
When to go: the cheaper months are the wetter ones
The best months for gorilla trekking in both countries are June to August, the driest in the mountains. Ruhengeri, by Volcanoes National Park, averages 13.3 mm of rain in July and 202.4 mm in April; Kabale, near Bwindi, gets 20.0 mm in July against 139.8 mm in April. December to February is the second window, wetter than July but far drier than April.
Both discounts fall in the rains. Uganda's $600 months are April, May and November, and Rwanda's $1,050 season runs from November to May. The gorillas don't move away in the wet season, but the trails get muddier, which is when a porter earns their fee. Our best time for an African safari guide has the rainfall month by month.
What the whole trip costs: two worked examples
From Kigali, seeing gorillas in southern Uganda costs less than a day trip to Rwanda's, even after the longer drive and two nights in a lodge. Here's the arithmetic for two people travelling together, per person.
Per person, two sharing | Rwanda in a day from Kigali | Uganda: two nights in southern Bwindi from Kigali |
|---|---|---|
Gorilla permit | $1,500 | $800 |
Lodge | None, back in Kigali the same night | $280 for two nights, full board, at Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge |
Transport | $175, half a private 4x4 for the day at $350 | $500, half a private transfer at $500 each way |
Lunch | $25 | Included in full board |
Total | $1,700 | $1,580, or $1,380 with the $600 permit |
The Rwanda column follows Visit Rwanda's own day-trip package, which leaves Kigali at 5 am and priced the private 4x4 at $350 in its 2024 price list. The Uganda column uses Ichumbi's published full-board rate and the private transfer price from Kigali on Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge's rate sheet. Porters ($15 to $20) and tips come on top in both.
A full Uganda safari puts the gorillas alongside chimpanzees and the savannah parks. Our partner's 6-day Uganda primates and wildlife safari costs $3,130 per person for two sharing, the 8-day trip with chimpanzees in Kibale $3,890, and the 10-day trip with Murchison Falls $4,680. All three include a gorilla trek in Bwindi.

Getting there: Kigali, Entebbe and the Kigali-to-Bwindi route
Rwanda is the easier country to reach the gorillas in: Volcanoes National Park is about 2 hours 30 minutes by road from Kigali airport. Uganda's Bwindi is 8 to 10 hours by road from Entebbe, or about 1 hour 10 minutes on a domestic flight to Kihihi or Kisoro, according to the Uganda Wildlife Authority.
The long road is real. One of our partners' guests wrote to "expect about 11 hours in the car" from Kampala to Bwindi, with stops at the equator and for lunch. The flight saves the day but adds a fare and a transfer at the other end: Ichumbi charges $200 per vehicle from Kisoro airstrip.
That's why so many travellers use Kigali for Uganda. Southern Bwindi, around Rushaga and Nkuringo, is 4 to 5 hours from Kigali by road, crossing into Uganda at Cyanika or Katuna, according to operators who run the route. Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge prices a private transfer from Kigali at $500 per vehicle each way. Crossing the border on a $100 East Africa Tourist Visa covers Uganda, Rwanda and Kenya for 90 days; a single Uganda visa costs $50.
How hard is the trek in each country?
Rwanda's treks are usually shorter, and Uganda's are steeper and longer, but both depend on where the family slept the night before. The Uganda Wildlife Authority puts a Bwindi trek at 2 to 7 hours including the hour with the gorillas. Visit Rwanda says hikes in Volcanoes take from 30 minutes to more than 4 hours.
Altitude works the other way. Rwanda's gorillas live at 2,500 to 4,000 m on the volcano slopes, where the air is thinner, while Bwindi spans 1,160 to 2,607 m.
Our partners' guests describe both. In Rwanda, one reached the family "after about 1 hour of hiking" and added that "the porter is a MUST during the wet season". In Uganda, another walked easy terrain for a little over an hour before climbing steep, slippery slopes into the forest. Within Bwindi, Buhoma is the gentlest sector and Nkuringo the hardest.
On the day, you report early. In Rwanda you check in at 7 am at the park headquarters in Kinigi, and in Bwindi the Uganda Wildlife Authority's fact sheet sets registration at 7.30 am, with the briefing at 8. Rangers then assign each group of up to eight to a family. Once you reach the gorillas you have one hour with them, at a minimum distance of 7 m in Rwanda and 10 m in Uganda.
Hire a porter in either country. They cost $15 to $20 in Uganda, carry your bag and pull you up the steep bits, and the money goes to people from the villages around the park. "PLEASE hire a porter!!!" one guest wrote, "even if you know you can carry your own backpack."
Is it safe? Advisories and Ebola, as of October 2026
Rwanda carries the lower government warning of the two. The US State Department rates Uganda Level 4, "do not travel", since 3 June 2026, citing crime, Ebola, terrorism and unrest, and notes that attacks have targeted national parks. Rwanda is Level 3, "reconsider travel".
The UK Foreign Office is less severe on both. For Uganda it warns of terrorism in the west near the Democratic Republic of Congo border, including national parks, and says the World Health Organization declared Uganda's Ebola outbreak over on 27 August 2026. For Rwanda it advises against travel only within 10 km of the Congo border in Rusizi District, far from Volcanoes National Park, and notes Ebola screening at Kigali airport.
If you're American, check whether your travel insurance covers a Level 4 country before you book Uganda. Advisories change, so check both governments' pages again shortly before you travel.
Where to stay at each budget
Rooms near Rwanda's gorillas cost about twice as much as Uganda's. On Booking.com for two nights in February 2027, the median room for two near Volcanoes National Park cost $169 a night, against $80 around Bwindi. The famous Bwindi lodges mostly sell through operators rather than Booking.com, so the Uganda figure leans to the cheaper end.
Lodge | Where | Price | Tripadvisor, October 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
Near Kisoro, 45 minutes from Rushaga | From $204 a night for a double | 4.8 (100 reviews) | |
Rushaga, 10 minutes' walk from the park gate | $280 a night for two, full board | 4.8 (193 reviews) | |
Buhoma, by the park entrance | On request | 4.8 (747 reviews) | |
Nkuringo, at the trailhead | $1,620 per person a night in high season, all-inclusive (2025/2026 rate sheet) | 4.9 (316 reviews) |
In Rwanda, Kinigi village by the park headquarters has a few small guesthouses rated 9 or more on Booking.com at $116 to $163 a night for two. At the top end, One&Only Gorilla's Nest cost $6,010 a night for two for the same February dates.
Which should you choose?
Choose Uganda if the budget matters, if you want more than the gorillas, or if you want the habituation experience. Its permit is $700 cheaper, its safaris add chimpanzees in Kibale and the savannah parks, and from Kigali it costs less than a Rwandan day trip. Our Uganda trips run with Churchill Safaris, who have 53 gorilla reviews from our guests.
Choose Rwanda if you're short of time, want a day trip from Kigali, or if the US Level 4 advisory for Uganda rules it out for you. A combined Uganda and Rwanda trip can also be arranged with operators we work with.
Can you do both, and what about Congo?
You can do both on one trip, and plenty of travellers do: most of the 25 guests who named both countries in their reviews flew into Kigali and crossed to Uganda by road. The $100 East Africa Tourist Visa covers both countries, and Kenya, for 90 days.
Congo is the third mountain gorilla country, but Virunga National Park had published no reopening for gorilla visits by October 2026. The UK Foreign Office advises against all travel to North and South Kivu, and the US State Department rates the Democratic Republic of Congo Level 4.
There are no mountain gorillas in Tanzania or Kenya. On a Tanzania safari, gorillas mean adding Uganda or Rwanda; our partner's Uganda trips start in Entebbe, and Kigali works too.

Rwanda vs Uganda gorilla trekking: frequently asked questions
Uganda is better value: the permit costs $800 against $1,500 in Rwanda, and $600 in April, May and November. Rwanda is better if you're short of time, because Volcanoes National Park is about 2 hours 30 minutes from Kigali. Both give you one hour with a habituated family.
Rwanda has the lower advisory. In October 2026 the US State Department rated Uganda Level 4 and Rwanda Level 3, and the UK Foreign Office warned of terrorism in western Uganda near the Congo border, including national parks. Check both governments' latest advice before you book.
The permit costs $800 in Uganda and $1,500 in Rwanda in 2026/2027. A day trip from Kigali to Rwanda's gorillas costs about $1,700 per person for two sharing, and two nights in southern Bwindi from Kigali about $1,580 including the transfer and a full-board lodge.
It's a hike of 30 minutes to 7 hours on steep, often muddy ground, including the hour with the gorillas. Treks in Rwanda are usually shorter; Bwindi's are steeper, with Nkuringo the hardest sector and Buhoma the gentlest. Hire a porter in either country.
You must be 15 or older in both Rwanda and Uganda.
It's a longer visit, offered only in Uganda, with a gorilla family that's still being habituated to people. Operators describe it as up to four hours with the family. The permit costs $1,500 now and $1,800 from 1 January 2027.
Yes. Many travellers fly into Kigali, trek in Rwanda, then cross the border to southern Bwindi, about 4 to 5 hours by road. The $100 East Africa Tourist Visa covers Uganda, Rwanda and Kenya for 90 days.
Yes, if your time is short. The $1,500 permit buys the quicker of the two trips: Volcanoes National Park is about 2 hours 30 minutes from Kigali, so you can trek and be back in Kigali the same night. If you have a week, Uganda's $800 permit and cheaper lodges go further.
No. Mountain gorillas live only in Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. A Tanzania safari can add gorillas with a flight to Kigali or Entebbe.
Our verdict: Uganda for value, Rwanda for speed
For most travellers we'd pick Uganda: the permit is $700 cheaper, the lodges cost about half as much, and the trip can take in chimpanzees and the savannah too. Rwanda earns its price when you only have a day or two.
Whichever you choose, book the permit early and budget for a porter. Then check the advisories again before you fly.
