The best safari lodges in Tanzania for most budgets are small, mostly tented camps that outscore the big-name lodges. Our top affordable picks are Kontiki in the Serengeti, Farm of Dreams near the Ngorongoro Crater and Suricata Boma by Lake Manyara. On 21 September 2026 we checked 76 lodges and camps on Tripadvisor, 60 of them from our partner operators' itineraries: 53 rated 4.7 or higher, while the three Serena lodges scored 4.3 to 4.4. Where the picks below publish a price, it runs from about $115 to $380 per person a night, full board, before park fees.

Every lodge here passed three tests. It appears in our partner operators' itineraries, 194 published Tanzania safaris from 33 companies, so these are places operators actually send guests. It rates 4.7 or higher on Tripadvisor, and we show how many reviews sit behind each rating. And it sits below the top-end camps that charge more than $1,000 per person a night, such as Singita and Four Seasons, which our Serengeti lodge ranking covers.

The rating test cut deeper than we expected. Only two of the eight lodges our partners use most passed it: Farm of Dreams in Karatu (4.7 from 646 reviews) and Kontiki (5.0 from 488). The big names that many itineraries still lean on sit lower, with the three Serenas at 4.3 to 4.4 and Tarangire Sopa at 4.2. The former Serengeti Sopa, reopened by Elewana in 2025 as Serengeti Explorer, rates 4.2 as well, and Seronera Wildlife Lodge 3.6.

ChatGPT gets this wrong too. We asked it for affordable safari lodges in Tanzania and none of the seven it named rates 4.7.

Best lodges and camps in the Serengeti

The best-value camps in the Serengeti are Kontiki Central Serengeti Camp near Seronera, Nyikani Migration Camp at Kogatende for the July to October crossings, and Lake Masek Tented Lodge for the calving around Ndutu. Pick the zone for your month, then the camp.

The herds are on the southern plains around Ndutu from December to March, in the western corridor around May and June, and in the north around Kogatende from July to October; the central Serengeti around Seronera has strong resident game all year. The central and northern camps below all sit inside the national park, so each adult pays a concession fee of $59 a night ($70.80 from July to September).

Central Serengeti (Seronera): all year

Of the eight lodges our partners use most, Kontiki is the only one rated 5.0, and five of them put it in their itineraries. Mawe is the camp that publishes its prices, from $195 per person in the low season to $280 in the peak months. For a step up, Nyota has a pool and priced two adults from $760 a night for February 2027. Moyo Tented Camp (4.8) and Signature Serengeti (5.0) also clear the bar.

Northern Serengeti (Kogatende): July to October

The river crossings happen up here. The camps are small and seasonal, so they sell out early; if your dates are fixed, book the north 9 to 12 months ahead.

Ndutu and the south: December to March

Lake Masek Tented Lodge is the permanent option: a tented lodge with a pool 4 km from Ndutu airstrip. It's open all year and rates 4.8 from 139 reviews. Nyikani and Safari Haven move their camps down to Ndutu for the calving season, so the same two names work in both halves of the year.

Lake Masek and Lake Ndutu sit inside the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, not the national park. The concession fee is the same $59 a night, and the conservation area charges its own entry fee of $70.80 a day.

Where to stay for the Ngorongoro Crater: rim or Karatu?

For the crater, stay in Karatu unless being first down in the morning matters most. Karatu is outside the conservation area, so there's no $59 concession fee. The seven lodges in the table below all clear 4.7.

On the rim the best-rated camp our partners use is Lion's Paw on the eastern side (4.9 from 1,570 reviews). It's a luxury tented camp that doesn't publish rates. Ngorongoro Serena rates 4.3 from 2,051 reviews, and six of our partners use it.

Farm of Dreams is the pick because it's the Karatu lodge our partners use most that clears 4.7: eight of them book it. Karatu Tented Lodge is the cheapest pick near the crater with a published rate: $118 to $144 per person with full board.

The catch is the drive. Karatu town is 16 km from the Lodoare gate, which the lodges put at 15 to 30 minutes away. The Seneto road down to the crater floor is another 32 km along the rim. Crater days start early. Guests in our partners' reviews mention leaving at 5:30 or 6 am. The rim can be cold and cloudy at that hour, so pack a warm layer.

Best lodges near Tarangire

The best-rated Tarangire lodges our partners use are Baobab Tented Camp inside the park (4.9) and Burunge Tented Lodge just outside it (4.7). Both are near Lake Burunge, on either side of the park boundary.

Baobab Tented Camp is the pick for elephants at the door. It's inside the park and runs night drives and walks from camp, for $194 to $256 per person. Burunge sits outside the park in a protection area the Mbugwe community has managed since 2003, so you drive in each morning.

Best lodges near Lake Manyara

Near Lake Manyara, the pick is Suricata Boma Lodge by Mto wa Mbu, rated 5.0 from 813 reviews. Mawe Mawe Manyara Lodge (4.8) is the step up, with a plunge pool in each villa.

Best lodges in Nyerere (Selous)

In Nyerere, Selous River Camp just outside the park is the value pick (4.8), and Selous Impala Camp inside it is the step up (4.9). Both sit on the Rufiji River.

Selous River Camp's booking engine priced a riverview tent at $230 a night for two, full board, for 15 October 2026, and because it's outside the park there's no concession fee. What these lodges cost in 2026

Most Tanzania safari lodges don't publish a rate, because they sell through safari operators. The picks that do, on their own rate sheets or booking engines, give a fair idea of the range. Per person per night, two sharing, full board, before park fees:

The Mawe Lodges sheets print no year and were updated in August and September 2026. Their peak season runs from 1 July to 31 October and 22 December to 5 January, high season from 6 January to 28 February, and low season covers the rest.

Cheaper doesn't mean worse here. In our partners' reviews 70 guests said their lodge or camp beat their expectations, several of them on mid-range packages.

For lodges that don't publish, our cost calculator uses $460 a night for a mid-range room for two in high season and $760 for a high-end one; the rates above fall either side of those. The safari builder lets you swap lodges and watch the total change.

What a lodge rate includes

Most rates here are full board, meaning the room and three meals a day. On game-drive days lunch is packed by the previous night's lodge, and guests in our partners' reviews say its quality varies a lot.

Bar drinks are usually extra; Mawe's camps and The Retreat both charge for them. Park and concession fees are almost never in a lodge rate, and neither are tips.

Don't count on connections either. Mawe, Selous Impala and Sound of Silence all say on their own sites that Wi-Fi reaches only the main area, and many camps run on solar power alone, so you charge cameras in the lounge.

The prices quoted are what you'd pay the lodge directly. Operators pay contracted trade rates, so treat them as a way to compare lodges rather than as the cost of a safari.

Is it cheaper to stay outside the park?

Staying outside a park saves the concession fee, which every adult pays on top of the room for each night inside a national park or the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. A safari quote includes it; lodge rate sheets list it as an extra. These are the 2026 fees, VAT included:

Children aged 5 to 15 pay $11.80 a night. Sources: the Tanzania National Parks tariff ($60, $50, $40 and $30 before 18% VAT) and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority's tariff.

Outside isn't always free. Some lodges sit in community wildlife management areas, which charge their own fee: Suricata Boma lists $29 per person per day (July 2023).

The drive in costs time too, and in the Serengeti the western Ikoma gate is about 38 km from Seronera. That's why every central and northern Serengeti pick here is inside the park. For the crater, Karatu is the better deal; our park fees guide has the full tariff.

Guests notice the difference. In our partners' reviews 62 guests mention staying inside a park and 33 say why it mattered, such as sunrise from camp or more time on game drives. Eight complained about extra driving caused by where they slept, including one moved to a lodge outside the park.

Lodge, tented camp or mobile camp?

A lodge has solid walls and more of everything: Farm of Dreams has 48 rooms and a pool, the Oldeani Mountain Lodge 50 rooms and a rim-flow pool. A permanent tented camp puts a proper bed and an en-suite bathroom inside canvas walls, usually on a raised deck, and most of the camps here have fewer than 25 tents. A mobile camp packs up two or three times a year to follow the herds, so it's smaller: Safari Haven's migration camp has five tents.

The nights are what guests remember about tents. In our partners' reviews 52 guests describe hearing animals from their tent or room at night or at dawn. Sixty-one had animals right by their tent, room or camp, and one guest's escort to the tent spotted a leopard in the trees.

That escort is standard: after dark a staff member walks you between the main area and your tent, and Baobab Tented Camp asks guests not to move around camp alone at night. In the same reviews four guests found the visitors a little scary, and 15 said outright that they felt safe.

For most first safaris the location matters more than the walls. A tent in the right zone for the month beats a lodge two hours from the herds.
