Quick answer

How much does a honeymoon safari cost?

A honeymoon safari for two costs about $7,700 for a private mid-range week in Tanzania and about $9,000 for nine days that end with three nights on Zanzibar, before international flights. Tanzania with Zanzibar is the classic first choice. Kenya, South Africa and Botswana each suit a different budget or month.

Tanzania with Zanzibar is the classic first choice. Kenya, South Africa and Botswana each suit a different budget or month.

By October 2026 our partner operators' guests had written 4,569 reviews, and 111 of them mentioned a honeymoon. The splits they describe run from nine days on safari and three on Zanzibar to a week of each. GetSafariTours founder Karlis Auzins sees the same in enquiries: mid-range honeymoons usually last 8 to 12 days, and the classic is a six-day safari followed by a week on the beach.

Key takeaways

  • Tanzania is the easiest safari-and-beach honeymoon. A direct flight from the Serengeti to Zanzibar takes 1 hour 40 minutes.
  • Our honeymoon itineraries cost a couple $3,340 for three days, $9,040 for nine days with Zanzibar at mid-range, and up to $19,740 for 14 days in the luxury tier, flights extra.
  • Do the safari first: after a week of early game drives, the beach is where you rest.
  • A "save 50%" honeymoon offer usually means one of you pays half, so the room costs 25% less, and only if you travel within six months of the wedding.
  • Book six months or more ahead for June to October, when the lodges near the migration fill up first.

Where to go on an African safari honeymoon

Tanzania is the best place for a first honeymoon safari, because a short flight links the Serengeti with Zanzibar's beaches and a private mid-range safari costs $400 to $700 per person a day. Each of the other countries wins on something specific.

Gorillas, as an add-on

The daily prices come from our African safari cost guide, which breaks them down country by country. The months come from our best time for an African safari guide.

Kenya suits couples who are short on time. Kenya Airways flies nonstop from New York to Nairobi, and a light aircraft reaches the Masai Mara in 30 to 45 minutes. South Africa is the other easy flight from the US, with Delta and United nonstop to Johannesburg and Cape Town. Its Eastern Cape reserves sit outside every malaria area on the CDC's list.

Botswana costs the most at mid-range because its camps in the private concessions are reached by light aircraft, at $300 to $500 a flight. It rewards couples who want the Okavango Delta's channels to themselves and can stretch the budget.

Gorillas are the add-on many couples consider. A permit costs $800 in Uganda and $1,500 in Rwanda, and trekkers must be 15 or older. Our partners in Uganda buy the permits for you. Check the latest advisory first, because the US State Department rated Uganda Level 4 on 11 October 2026. Our Uganda gorilla trekking guide covers the permits and the trek.

Some couples go further. Karlis describes the adventurous version as three countries in one trip. It starts with a six-day safari in Tanzania and moves on to Uganda or Rwanda for the gorillas, then to Botswana or South Africa. Each border adds at least one regional flight, so a trip like that works best with two weeks or more.

When to go: match the safari to your wedding date

June to October is the best time for a honeymoon safari almost everywhere in Africa. In Tanzania, January and February make a second window with the wildebeest calving in the southern Serengeti and Zanzibar at its hottest. The table matches the season to the month you marry.

September or October

November to February

Zanzibar averages 13.7 rainy days in November; Christmas and New Year are its dearest weeks; Ramadan 2027 runs from about 8 February to 9 March

Low season has its fans. A tent at Lemala Ewanjan in the central Serengeti costs $595 per person a night in peak season and $305 from March to May. Between 15 March and 15 May the Serengeti's park fee also drops from $82.60 to $70.80 a day.

The short rains don't always spoil a trip. One couple who honeymooned at the end of November wrote that they had "almost only sunshine". Uganda's gorilla permits drop to $600 in April, May and November.

Safari and beach: how many nights of each, and in which order

Plan a safari and beach honeymoon of 8 to 12 days, with the safari first. Karlis says that is the usual mid-range length. The classic split is a six-day safari followed by a week on Zanzibar. "After a six, eight or ten-day safari you're tired, and the beach afterwards is perfect," he says.

Game drives start early and fill most of the day. One couple in our partners' reviews called nine days on safari and three on Zanzibar "the perfect amount of time", and another took a week of each. The other order works too. You can also base yourselves on Zanzibar and fly to the Serengeti for a night or two, which our safari from Zanzibar guide prices route by route.

Getting from one to the other is easy. Scheduled flights reach Zanzibar from Arusha in 1 hour 5 minutes and from the Serengeti's Seronera airstrip in 1 hour 40 minutes direct. Our where is Zanzibar guide has the airlines' timetables. On our honeymoon itineraries the flight is part of the trip.

The beach is also where the budget recovers. In our calculator a mid-range safari day for two costs about $985: $460 for the room, $165 in park fees and $360 for the vehicle and guide. According to the Bank of Tanzania, visitors who arranged their own stay on Zanzibar spent $211 each a night in 2025 with the room and meals included. So every night you move from the bush to the beach saves roughly $550 for the two of you.

What a honeymoon safari costs for two

A honeymoon safari in Tanzania costs a couple $3,340 for three days and $9,040 for nine days with Zanzibar at mid-range. In the luxury tier the same nine days cost $14,020. These are our partner operators' 2026/2027 prices for our honeymoon itineraries, per person for two people sharing.

Across Africa, our cost guide puts a mid-range safari at $400 to $900 per person a day. That makes $5,600 to $12,600 for a couple's week, before flights.

Each price covers the lodges and the meals and transfers in the itinerary. It also covers a private 4x4 with an English-speaking guide, the park fees and the flight to Zanzibar where the trip has one. International flights and visas are extra, as are travel insurance and tips. "Luxury tier" is the operator's name for its higher-end lodges. Every itinerary is private, so you never share the vehicle.

Our safari cost calculator prices a seven-day private safari for two in high season at $5,809 at budget level and $7,741 at mid-range. At the high end it's $9,811. The same mid-range week costs $6,585 in low season. Karlis sees a pattern in who spends what: couples from Europe take longer and watch the budget, and North Americans have less time but spend more on it.

Honeymoon cost guides online can differ by two to one for the same trip, because some quote per person and others per couple. Every figure on this page says which.

For two from New York, the nine-day mid-range trip comes to about $11,800 to $12,500. The itinerary costs $9,040, and return flights to Kilimanjaro usually cost $1,050 to $1,350 each. Two US visas add $200 and Tanzania's compulsory insurance $88. Tips come to about $360 to $490. From London the total is about £8,500 to £9,200, with fares of £630 to £920 each and the cheaper UK visa. Drinks at mid-range lodges, Zanzibar excursions and a balloon flight come on top.

Safari honeymoon packages: what lodges actually give you

A safari honeymoon package usually gets you a honeymoon suite, a private bush dinner or a surprise such as a cake. "Most mid-range-plus lodges have a honeymoon package of some kind," says Karlis. He describes the dinner as a table for the two of you under the sky with champagne, away from the other guests. Tell your operator it's your honeymoon when you book, so each lodge knows before you arrive.

Our partners' reviews show what that looks like on the ground. Signature Serengeti is a tented camp in the central Serengeti. It surprised three different couples with a song and a honeymoon cake, and Lions Paw at Ngorongoro did the same for one of them. Another couple were upgraded to the honeymoon suite at Escarpment Luxury Lodge near Lake Manyara. All three scored 4.8 or more on Tripadvisor in October 2026.

The guides join in too. One decorated the safari vehicle with stickers for a couple's first game drive, and another operator arranged a honeymoon ceremony at one of the lodges.

andBeyond publishes a formal offer. Its honeymoon offer says "save 50%", but only one of you gets the half price. So the couple saves 25% of the room, on these conditions:

  • travel within six months of the wedding, with the marriage certificate to prove it
  • two nights minimum
  • the discount comes off the lodge's published rack rate, and it can't be combined with other offers or used on family rooms and villas
  • flights, taxes and the levy extra

Go2Africa lists andBeyond's Lake Manyara Tree Lodge at $1,060 to $1,690 per person a night. A couple paying the top rate would pay $2,535 a night instead of $3,380. That saves $1,690 over the two-night minimum. It is still more than two and a half mid-range safari days in our calculator, so the offer helps most if you'd have booked a top camp anyway.

The timing rule catches people out. Marry in December and wait for the dry season in July, and you're past the six-month window.

Where to spend and where to save

Spend on privacy and on one special night. Every itinerary in our table is private, so the vehicle and the guide are yours alone. Then pay for the bush dinner or the suite on the night that matters, rather than for an expensive lodge every night. A sunrise balloon flight over the Serengeti costs $599 per person in our calculator, and our balloon safari guide explains what you get for it.

Save on the calendar and on the beach. Low-season rates halve the price of some Serengeti camps, and every night moved to Zanzibar saves roughly $550 for two. Our affordable lodge picks by park only include camps rated 4.7 or more on Tripadvisor, at under about $1,000 a night.

Famous names are the easiest saving. Even with a 50% honeymoon offer, one night for two at a top camp can cost more than two mid-range days on safari. If you want one splurge in Tanzania, our Tanzania honeymoon lodges guide compares them.

How far ahead to book

Book six months or more ahead for a honeymoon safari between June and October, and about three months ahead for other months. Karlis's rule of thumb comes from lodge availability: the camps near the migration in high season fill up first. On Zanzibar, the weeks around Christmas and New Year often come with minimum stays as well.

Two other things run on dates. Uganda's gorilla permits are only secured by paying in full at booking, a rule in force since 1 March 2026. A honeymoon discount needs you to travel within its window after the wedding, so book early but don't wait too long to go.

Malaria, insurance, visas and what to wear

Tanzania and Zanzibar carry malaria risk and so do Kenya's game parks. Plan on tablets, and see our vaccinations and malaria guide for what to ask the clinic. Tanzania also charges every visitor $44 for a compulsory insurance policy, valid for 92 days. One policy covers both the mainland and Zanzibar, on top of your own travel insurance.

Honeymoon safari: frequently asked questions

A mid-range African safari costs $400 to $900 per person a day, or $5,600 to $12,600 for a couple's week before flights. In Tanzania a private honeymoon safari costs a couple $3,340 for three days and about $7,700 for a mid-range week. Nine days with three nights on Zanzibar cost $9,040 at mid-range and $14,020 in the luxury tier on our itineraries. The nine-day mid-range trip comes to about $11,800 to $12,500 for two with flights from New York and the other extras.

Tanzania with Zanzibar is the best choice for most couples on a first safari, because the Serengeti is a direct flight of 1 hour 40 minutes from Zanzibar's beaches. South Africa suits couples who want a city and reserves without malaria. Kenya suits short trips, and Botswana a bigger budget.

Most mid-range honeymoons last 8 to 12 days, says GetSafariTours founder Karlis Auzins. The classic split is a six-day safari and a week on Zanzibar. A three-day safari to the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater is the shortest that works, at $3,340 for two on our itinerary.

Do the safari first. Game drives start early and after six to ten days the beach is where you rest. The other order works too. So does a stay on Zanzibar with a fly-in safari of one or two nights.

A lodge's honeymoon package usually means a bush dinner for two, a honeymoon suite or a surprise such as a cake. Formal offers like andBeyond's "save 50%" take half the room rate off for one partner, which is 25% off for the couple. You must travel within six months of the wedding and stay at least two nights.

June to October is the best time almost everywhere in Africa. In Tanzania, January and February make a second window for the wildebeest calving. Zanzibar is at its hottest then, with the fewest rainy days of the year in February. April and May bring the long rains to East Africa, when some camps and beach hotels close.

Book six months or more ahead for June to October, when the lodges near the migration fill up. About three months is enough for other months. Uganda's gorilla permits must be paid in full when you book.

Yes. Red is fine in towns and at the lodge, and it's the colour the Maasai wear. On game drives, neutral colours are the better choice. Dark blue and black attract tsetse flies, and camouflage clothing is illegal for civilians in Tanzania.

Yes for Tanzania and Zanzibar, and for Kenya's game parks. South Africa's Eastern Cape reserves are outside the CDC's malaria areas. So are Madikwe and Pilanesberg, which makes them the choice if you'd rather not take tablets.

Book the bush first, and stay longer on the beach

Our default honeymoon for a couple we'd never met would be six days on safari in Tanzania with a private guide and then five to seven nights on Zanzibar. It costs less than a longer safari and leaves time to rest. The flight between the two takes under two hours.

Spend on the night you'll remember: a bush dinner or a suite with a view. And tell every lodge it's your honeymoon. Most of them will mark it in some way.
